One News Now — A conservative leader says the GOP may be able to win minority voters if lawmakers communicate the strong values on which they will stand.
Commentators blame the California Republican Party’s financial troubles on the party’s inability to win Latino voters and to raise funds to maintain a strong statewide presence. The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the state GOP has struggled with demographics for years, as it has had trouble raising money, paying for a voter registration program and hiring field staff.
Although CRP Chairman Tom Del Beccaro has worked hard to win Latino support for years, he says his party is still having trouble. Celeste Greig, president of the California Republican Assembly, suggests that the GOP must stand firm on its values.
“Maybe we should get more out of the comfort zones of our communities and go more into areas where there’s predominant Mexican-American or Salvadorian [individuals], and tell them, Look at me. I may not have the same color of skin, but I share your values; you share our values, so we have something in common,” Greig offers. “The Hispanic community is very, very strong pro-family, very strong pro-education.”
